What is Reverse Osmosis System? by Michal Ryan

A process of filtering which removes various types of large ions and molecules from solutions by the application of pressure on the solution, while it is on a selective membrane’s one side is known as Reverse Osmosis System. The result of this system is that the solute remains on the membrane’s pressurized side, while the pure solvent passes on to the other side. The membranes which are used in the reverse osmosis system have in their polymer matrix, a dense layer of barrier where most of the separations occur. Mostly, this membrane is designed in such a way that only water passes through it, leaving behind the solutes.

A high pressure of 2-17 bars for fresh water and 40-70 bars for seawater is exerted on the membrane’s high concentration side to overcome the water’s natural osmotic pressure. In reversed osmosis, two forces influence the water’s movement, the pressure applied externally and the difference in the concentration of solute between the 2 compartments.

Reverse Osmosis System is used throughout the world for drinking water purification systems in homes, for the improvement of water for cooking and drinking. Water processors using reverse osmosis system are used to purify rain water accumulated from storm drains and is used for industrial cooling and landscape irrigation. This system is used in industries for removing minerals from the boiler water in power plants.

Reverse osmosis system is also used for cleaning brackish and effluent groundwater and for producing de-ionized water. Reverse osmosis system has various applications in food industries too, which include concentrating food liquids; in dairy industry for concentration of milk; and the production of protein powders. Because of lower mineral content in the water after reverse osmosis system, it is used for car washes for the final rinsing of the vehicle. The reverse osmosis system is used by a large number of reef aquarium keepers for artificial seawater mixture.


A disadvantage of the Water Filters process of reverse osmosis system is that the units used in households require a lot of water, as their back pressure is low. Thus, only 5-15 % of the water entering this system is recovered, while the remaining goes out as waste water.
